In 1939, King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, came to Victoria as part of the first-ever visit of a reigning sovereign to Canada (the US was also included in the King's whirlwind North American tour).
The visit took place during a period of growing international anxiety over the threat of a war in Europe. It's been suggested that the royal presence was intended as a kind of national tonic for a Canada possibly considering opting out of the conflict.
During his time in the city, the King presented his Colour (a distinguished form of heraldic flag symbolising loyalty) to the Royal Canadian Navy at a ceremony in Beacon Hill Park on 30 May, 1939.
A film of this important occasion was recently discovered in our museum's collection. The 16mm footage has now been converted to DVD, and copies of this 14 minute silent colour film capturing the royal visit in all its pomp and ceremonial precision are available for $10 from the museum gift shop.
