CFB Esquimalt Naval & Military Museum is pleased to feature author David J. Freeman's definitive work Canadian Warship Names.
Through his painstaking research and professional interest, Dave Freeman has compiled in this book over 900 names of Canadian naval vessels, auxiliaries, shore establishments, plus some relevant Royal Navy ships, like HMS NABOB.
Each name listed includes the origin and meaning of the name, its historical context, all occasions of its use, the dates of commissioning and paying off of the vessels, relevant pendant numbers, and whether the name was assigned an official badge.
Dave has included a thorough discussion and complete history of the processes involved in naming Canadian warships from 1910 to 2000. He has also included 19 appendices. As a result of his lifelong interest in this subject, Dave was appointed Advisor to the Ships' Names Committee from 1988 until 1999. In 2001, Dave's book won the John Lyman Book Award for "Reference Work and Published Primary Source" given by the North American Society for Oceanic History.
Dave Freeman joined the RCNR in 1960 in HMCS NONSUCH as a UNTD Cadet. In 1967 he transferred to the RCN as an Instructor Officer - later Training Development Officer - and retired in 1996 as a Lieutenant-Commander. Since that time he has been a volunteer at CFB Esquimalt Naval & Military Museum.

CFB Esquimalt Naval & Military Museum is pleased to announce its publication of Audrey Sim Shortridge's book On the Double, Matilda!
The book is one woman's account of her experiences in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS) during WWII, and her journey to independence.
Audrey's reminiscences about basic training at HMCS Conestoga in Ontario, and caring for patients at HMCS Avalon in Newfoundland represent a welcome addition to existing knowledge of the WRCNS.
